Who: Gamma Theta – University of Mt. Union

What: ‘Burgers and Fries with ADPi’s’

When: September 13, 2017

How many times has this event been held? This is the third year the event has been held.

Tell us about your event. Sisters were stationed at the event collecting/selling tickets, passing out food, filling drinks, cooking burgers, being food runners, organizing cornhole, greeting guests, and more. Anyone and everyone is invited to come to our event. Tickets were sold at $5 and included (1) burger, (1) serving of fries, and a drink. Guests could buy an extra ticket for $5, an extra burger for $2, or an extra serving of fries for $1. We also organized a cornhole tournament alongside the event for a guest participation. This also served to broaden the event from previous years. Registration for teams cost $6 per pair, or $3 per person. The winners each received a cash prize. At this event, guests can meet sisters, mingle with others in the community, learn about RMHC, and have a fun time!

How did you publicize the event? We created a few images that sisters could post on social media to publicize the event. These images were similar to the ticket for the event. Our Public Relations chair also used these images, as well as pictures from last year’s event, to publicize on all of our social media pages. Additionally, blurbs went out in the announcement section of the school’s website. This was the pre-event coverage and post-event coverage.

How did you involve the entire chapter and get them excited? The entire chapter signed up for stations to work at during the event. Sisters received Pi Points for each ticket sold. Pi Points are our chapter’s system of rewarding involvement. The sister with the most tickets sold received a Thirty-One Bag that was purchased in one of the RMHC patterns (so the purchase also benefitted RMHC).

What do you think contributed to your success? I believe the hard work of the chapter contributed to this event. As a relatively new event, a lot of work falls on our individual sisters to ensure the event’s success. As Philanthropy Chair, I planned the date, time, location, grocery list, decorations, etc. to make sure the event was organized and up and running. However, each of our sisters plays an integral role in the event’s overall success.  It is up to each sister to spread word of the event to the campus community, to spark interest, and to dedicate their time and work to the day of the event. We all do our best to make sure our guests want to come back every year we hold this event.

What tips would you offer to other chapters planning a similar event? As the Philanthropy Chair for Alpha Delta Pi during the past two years, I have learned a lot from planning and executing this event twice. I would encourage anyone planning an event to ask businesses in your area for donations. Sometimes events, such as food events like this, can be expensive and the budget is not always enough to cover the costs of the event. It is always wise to avoid using event profits to cover expenses whenever possible. For this event, our food service on campus (AVI) donated 300 hamburger buns. AVI even helped us out by cooking our fries for us too! A few other places we received donations from are grocery stores, our local movie theater, local restaurants, and more. Some businesses may not make donations, but it never hurts to ask!
